Readers who were disturbed by the God and the Virgins posting of 13 December, 2007, may be interested to read this update from Religion News:
State police on Tuesday arrested on sex charges the leader of an apocalyptic sect in northeastern New Mexico.
Wayne Bent was arrested on three charges of criminal sexual contact, said state police spokesman Peter Olson.
There was no immediate information as to whether the alleged victims are minors.
“There was no incident, no commotion, no problems,” Olson said.
The state Children, Youth and Families Department recently removed three children — two girls and a boy, all under 18 — from the compound on a former ranch in a remote area near the New Mexico-Colorado line.
Agency officials have said state police and the district attorney’s office were investigating whether there was inappropriate contact between Bent and minors.
Bent, 66, who goes by the name of Michael Travesser, is the leader of The Lord Our Righteousness Church, which moved to the site in 2000.
Bent has acknowledged having sex with followers — including his daughter-in-law — and lying naked with virgins. He said the virgins asked for sex, but he refused.
In a posting on the church’s Web site, he denied that there was any molestation of children or adults at the community, which Bent’s followers call Strong City.
Bent accused the state of kidnapping the children.
A former member of the sect has estimated there are about 50 people on the compound. The three children removed last month are believed to have been the only minors there.

SANTA FE, N.M. — Authorities say the leader of an apocalyptic sect in northeastern New Mexico has been released from jail after his son posted his bond.
The clerk of the magistrate court in Clayton said a $55,000 bond was posted for Wayne Bent. He was released Friday afternoon.
Bent is accused of sex crimes against young female followers. His sect lives on a compound called Strong City in a remote area near the New Mexico-Colorado line.
At first court appearance on Thursday, his bond was lowered from $500,000.
Excellent news. Hope he is held to account and investigated in the normal process of the law. If he has done nothing wrong then he need not have anything to be worried about. He is not above the law.

What puzzles me most when I read stories like this one is that there are naive people out there willing to follow these deranged perverts.
What the heck is wrong with our society? When will people wake up and stop looking for someone to follow/obey?
Listening to “a voice” can be dangerously deceiving. It will often be “god.” The children of YAHWEH know the “voice of God” and follow Him circumspectly.

You have no right to judge these innocent people. I do also believe that from the teachings of the Bible and EGW writings that Wayne is a false prophet. However that is not for us to judge him or the people that have chosen to listen to him and his (mis)leadings.
My prayer for the LOR followers is that their eyes be opened to the truth. Now that Wayne is behind bars and will possibly stay there for the remainder of his life, maybe those people left at Strong City will be less influenced by his ideas of the Bible and get out of that place.
They have been brain washed so long that it wi=ould be difficult for them to think on their own. They will need a lot of help. Prayers are always good. I pray for these people, including Wayne Bent and you “Cry Tears” to open their eyes and hearts to the one truse God ask for help in transitioning away fron Strong City.

What I find so sad is that many are seeking people like Mr. Bent because they are not satisifed with their own church and their pastors answers to questions they can’t answer. Even people like you and I are probably following and/or practicing lies that were taught to us at an early age.
It does not matter what church you attend, for none of them have the whole truth (which is singular and absolute). Therefore we all should strive to know what Jesus said and taught and given to us by His OWN eyewitnesses–ONLY! (John 14:26) This is the ONLY way all of us who claim to be Christians can have unity, as what Jesus prayed for and found in John 17. Only then will people not fall for this type of person to lead them to hell.
People who are drawn to cults are not necessarily stupid or naive and unsophisticated. They could simply be tired of the main stream society that we live in.
In main stream society we have children as young as eight want to dress like Paris Hilton. We have many more people who are ready to exploit the young, the old or anyone who’s vulnerable. I myself live in a nice neighborhood and we are getting break-ins and car thefts every week. A lot of people are nice, but it just take a handful or loud obnoxious people that makes one tired and just want to pack it up and join a commune.
So enters the likes of Wayne Bent, ready and willing to snap up these people. He does not have money or power to wield over people to get what he wants, so he figured out how persuasive he is and used it. He could get away with anything, even sleeping with his daughter in law. My heart goes out to the parents who raised their children in this environment and then realized their mistakes.
What can we do to counter such charlatans? We are to show people the hope that is in us. We are to maintain a tight community of friends, neighbors and families. We have wide, world wide webs of communities and large quantities of people but very little closeness, very little buffer when others are damaging and thoughtless towards us.

I was employing the small case “g” in “god” referring to all “flase gods” which amounts to the worship of Satan. My use of the capital “G” in “God” was to refer to the only True and Living God, YAHWEH, and His Son, YAHSHUA (commonly known as Jesus). I am Creation Seventh Day Adventist (not to be confused with the General Conference of SDA). We do not believe God is a “respecter of persons.” He accepts all “true worship.” We must find out what “true worship” is from the Bible, as we allow the Spirit of the Living God to lead us into all truth. We dare not “lean on the arm of flesh” or any so-called “voice” that we hear or perceive in our minds. What we need is a “thus saith the LORD” from the Scriptures.
